Moonlit Folly

There is a triumphal archway nearby to me built in 1798 it has no practical purpose hence its rather a folly. Its become rather overgrown over the years and somewhat forgotten. After a recent night time ride by during a full moon it struck me as being rather atmospheric, quite often there are fallow deer foraging in and around it not to mention lots of bats when they're not hibernating in Winter.

I tried to memorise the scene and attempted to paint it later on ( I didn't fancy trying to paint it in a cold and lonely field at midnight! not to mention that would be rather awkward! )
I decided to play around with some newly acquired impasto and used it to add a textured frosty ploughed field in the foreground.

Overall I'm fairly satisfied with my first painting for 2017. An in like Flynn January the 1st upload!

Painted on a box canvas frame using gesso, acrylics and some impasto.
